Eyebrow Shaping in Chicago: What to Expect, What It Costs

Great brow shaping starts with a map, not a pair of tweezers. At Sugar Pop Salon in Chicago’s West Loop, eyebrow shaping is $42, and brow shaping with a tint is $63. Your esthetician measures your face, plans the shape around the brows you already have, and then removes only the hairs that don’t belong. This guide covers how the appointment works, how to ask for natural-looking brows, what tinting involves, and how to book.
TL;DR
-
Eyebrow Shaping is $42 and Brow Shaping & Tint is $63 at Sugar Pop Salon, so adding a tint costs $21 more. Our studio is non-tipping, so the listed price is what you pay.
-
Shaping starts with an 8-point brow mapping, so the shape follows your bone structure and your natural growth instead of a trend.
-
Say what you want to keep. Photos of brows you love (and brows you don’t) help more than adjectives.
-
Never tint your brows at home. The FDA advises against dyeing eyebrows or eyelashes yourself, so leave it to a licensed professional.
-
Sensitive skin? Tell us before we start. We look at your skin first and adjust the plan.

What eyebrow shaping actually is
Eyebrow shaping means removing stray hairs to define the line of your brow, then leaving the rest alone. A good shaping appointment is closer to editing than to rebuilding. You keep your fullness, your arch (or lack of one) and your personality. The hair that goes is the hair below the natural bottom line, between the brows, and stragglers past the tail.
The goal is brows that look like yours on your best day. That is why we start with measurements rather than a template.
The methods you will hear about
There are a few common ways to shape brows. Waxing removes lots of hair efficiently, threading allows targeted shaping, and tweezing is precise and can suit sensitive skin. Each has fans. One celebrity brow expert quoted in the same guide, Joey Healy, points out that brows can be harder to correct after threading, which is a good reason to be conservative the first time you try any new method or new person.

At Sugar Pop, our whole studio is built around sugaring, a paste made from three ingredients: sugar, water and lemon. If you already know you like gentle, all-natural hair removal on your body, brows are a natural extension of that.
How our brow shaping appointment works
Here is what happens when you book brow shaping at our West Loop studio.
-
Chat first. We ask what you like, what bugs you about your brows now, and whether you have had reactions to products before.
-
Look at your skin. We check the skin around your brows. If it’s irritated, recently peeled or reactive, we adjust the plan or reschedule.
-
Map the brow. Our 8-point brow mapping marks where your brow should begin, arch and end, based on your face, not on a one-size-fits-all shape.
-
Shape. We remove the hairs outside the map, working slowly and checking symmetry as we go.
-
Tint, if you booked it. More on that below.
-
Finish and aftercare. We tidy up, calm the skin and tell you how to care for it, including what to avoid for the rest of the day.
We never rush. At Sugar Pop, appointments are built so you aren’t being hustled out of the chair, and brows are exactly where that matters: a few extra minutes of checking symmetry is the difference between “nice” and “wow, that looks like me.”
How to ask for natural-looking brows
Most shaping regrets come from a mismatch between what someone pictured and what the stylist heard. A few habits fix that.
-
Bring photos. Show two or three brows you love, and one you don’t. “Soft and full” means different things to different people.
-
Use verbs, not adjectives. “Clean up underneath, leave the top untouched, keep the tail long” is far clearer than “natural.”
-
Say what you are growing out. If you’re recovering from over-plucking, tell us. We’ll shape lightly and let the gaps fill in.
-
Mention your hair texture and growth. Coarse, curly, sparse or patchy brows all need different calls. We work with a wide range of skin tones and hair textures every day.
-
Speak up mid-appointment. If something feels too thin, say so right away. It’s much easier to take less than to put hair back.
If you want to keep thick brows (a very common request), the answer is usually less removal, a cleaner lower line and a defined start and tail. Thick and tidy is entirely doable.
Brow tinting: what it does and what to know first
Tinting adds color to the brow hairs, and often to the fine hairs and skin underneath, so brows look fuller and more defined for longer than makeup does. It’s popular if your brows are light, sparse, graying or just hard to see without product.
The safety piece matters, and it’s why a salon is the right place. The FDA says you should not dye your eyebrows or eyelashes at home because it can injure your eyes and cause permanent discoloration or even blindness. The same page notes that cosmetics for professional use may contain up to 4% silver nitrate in a viscous gel. In short: leave eye-area color to a licensed professional using products made for that purpose.

The skin around the eyes is thin and delicate. State regulators say so too: Alabama’s cosmetology board reminds licensees that products should be specifically intended and legally approved for eyebrow and eyelash use. It’s a fair thing for you to ask any salon: which product do you use on brows, and is it meant for this area?
Questions to ask before any tint
-
Is the tint made for eyebrows?
-
Will you check my skin first?
-
Do you do a patch test if I’ve had reactions to hair dye, or can we talk through my history?
-
What shade will you start with? (We’d rather go a touch softer than too dark.)
-
What should I avoid afterward?
If you have a history of reactions to hair dye, a known allergy, or you’re on a prescription topical for your face, tell your esthetician up front, and check with your doctor or dermatologist if you are unsure whether a tint is right for you.
Brow shaping and tint prices in Chicago
Online price ranges around the city vary widely depending on the method and the studio, and many places add charges or expect a tip on top. Here is exactly what we charge, with no tip needed.
| Service | Price | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Eyebrow Shaping | $42 | 8-point brow mapping and shaping |
| Brow Shaping & Tint | $63 | Shaping plus a brow tint |
Both are listed on our brow shaping page, and the rest of our menu is on the services and pricing page. Because Sugar Pop is proudly non-tipping, the price you see is the price you pay.
If you are comparing, think about total cost, not just the sticker price: add-on fees, tip, how long the appointment lasts, and whether someone will actually map your brows or just follow a stencil.
Shaping alone, or shaping plus tint?
Book shaping alone if your brows are dark and full enough already. Choose shaping with a tint if your brows are fine, light or gray, if you skip brow makeup, or if you want the new shape to read clearly from day one. Not sure? Book the tint version for your first visit: you’ll see what it does, and you can decide next time.
Our point of view
Brows are the one hair removal service people see every time they look in the mirror, so there’s no hiding a rushed job. We started as a sugaring studio, so gentleness is already how we think. We take our time, we map before we remove anything, and we shape the brow you have rather than the one on someone’s mood board.
We also train every esthetician one-on-one for weeks, because we’re both working estheticians in the studio every day and we want to see the work ourselves. That is what “owner-run” means here. You get the same standards whether you booked a brow shaping or a Brazilian.
Our clients come in with every skin tone, hair texture and level of sensitivity, and none of them should feel judged for the state of their brows. Over-plucked in 2014? Never touched them? Come as you are. We’ll take it from there.
The Sugar Pop Team
Sensitive skin and brow shaping
If your skin reacts easily, say so when you book and again in the chair. A few things are worth knowing.
-
Skin around the eyes is delicate. That’s the reason we look at your skin before we start, rather than assuming it’s ready.
-
Tell us what’s on your face. Retinoids, strong exfoliating acids, recent peels and sunburn can all make skin more reactive. Mention them, and we’ll decide whether to go ahead or wait.
-
Go easy afterward. Skip heavy makeup, scrubs and hot steam on the shaped area for the rest of the day, or follow whatever aftercare your esthetician gives you.
-
Short redness can happen. Hair removal near the eyes can leave brief pinkness. If you have swelling, pain, blistering or anything near your eyes that worries you, contact your doctor.
Sugaring uses a simple, all-natural paste, which is part of why people with reactive skin come to us after wax bothers them.
How often to get your brows shaped
Brow hair grows in cycles, so not every hair is visible at once. Most people settle into a rhythm that suits how fast their hair grows and how tidy they like the line. If you’re growing in sparse brows, come less often and let us only trim the obvious strays. If you love a crisp look, you may come more often. We’ll tell you what we see at the end of your appointment, and you can set your own pace from there.
If you tint, expect the tint to fade gradually, and plan your next visit around when you want the color refreshed. Your esthetician can suggest timing based on your hair and skin.
Brows plus the rest of your routine
A lot of people discover us for one thing and end up adding another. A few combinations that make sense:
-
Brows and upper lip: a quick facial sugaring add-on. Upper Lip is $17, and Full Face, Brows Excluded is $56.
-
Brows before an event: book your shaping a few days ahead so any pinkness settles and you can do a test run with makeup.
-
Brows plus body sugaring: if you’re tired of wax on your legs or underarms, our body sugaring menu has Underarms from $28 and Full Legs at $113.
-
Brows plus a Brazilian: our Brazilian and bikini sugaring is our core service. The Brazilian is $75 and includes complimentary numbing spray and ingrown-hair extractions.

FAQ
How much does eyebrow shaping cost at Sugar Pop Salon?
Eyebrow Shaping is $42, and Brow Shaping & Tint is $63. We’re a non-tipping salon, so those prices are what you pay. You can check the current menu on our brow shaping page.
Can I get my brows shaped and tinted in the same visit?
Yes. That’s our Brow Shaping & Tint service. We map and shape first, then tint, so the color follows the final shape. If you’re unsure about the tint, tell us beforehand and we’ll talk through your skin and history.
Is it safe to tint my brows at home?
The FDA advises against dyeing eyebrows or eyelashes at home, because it can hurt your eyes and cause lasting damage. Book a licensed professional who uses products made for the brow area.
What should I bring to my first brow appointment?
Photos of brows you love and one you don’t, plus a quick note about anything your skin reacts to. Come with your usual brow makeup on if you like; we’ll just cleanse the area first. If you’ve been over-plucking, tell us, and we’ll shape lightly.
Do you do brows for sensitive skin?
Yes. We look at your skin before we start and adjust the service to it. Mention retinoids, recent peels, past reactions or allergies when you book, and we’ll plan around them.
