Brazilian Wax Alternatives: What to Try Instead

Esthetician applies sugar paste at bikini line

If you want a Brazilian without the wax, your main options are sugaring, shaving, depilatory creams, laser hair removal and electrolysis. For most people who like the smooth, few-weeks-long result of waxing but not the burn, redness and ingrowns, sugaring is the closest swap. It’s the one we do all day at Sugar Pop Salon in Chicago’s West Loop, so we’re biased, but we’ll show our work and the sources.

TL;DR

  • Sugaring is the nearest swap for waxing. It uses a water-based paste and removes hair for about three weeks, according to Baylor College of Medicine.

  • Shaving and creams are short-term. They trim or dissolve hair at the surface, so you repeat them often.

  • Laser and electrolysis are multi-session commitments. Laser needs several visits and works best on dark hair.

  • Pain is personal. Sugaring can feel gentler for some people, but nobody can promise zero ouch. Our Brazilians include numbing spray.

  • Your first Brazilian with us is 50% off. A regular Brazilian is $75.

The main Brazilian wax alternatives at a glance

The American Academy of Dermatology lists shaving, depilatories, laser hair removal and electrolysis among the main ways to remove unwanted hair, and it also mentions threading, which isn’t practical for large areas. Add sugaring and you have the full menu for the bikini area.

Here’s how they compare on what most people actually care about:

Method How it works How long it lasts Best for Watch out for
Sugaring Sugar paste removes hair from the root About three weeks Anyone leaving wax behind, sensitive or textured skin Still can irritate if done badly or too many passes
Waxing Wax removes hair from the root A few weeks or longer Smooth results on a schedule Redness, ingrowns, burning if wax is too hot
Shaving Blade cuts hair at the surface Daily to every few days Quick touch-ups Ingrowns and razor bumps
Depilatory cream Chemical dissolves hair at the surface Longer than shaving Painless, at-home option Irritant or allergic reactions
Laser Light targets pigment in the hair Significant reduction after a series Dark hair, long-term planning Several sessions, cost, not for light hair
Electrolysis Current destroys the follicle Permanent after several sessions Any hair color Can be uncomfortable, needs a skilled, sterile provider

A quick note on terms. A 2021 literature review sorts shaving and creams into depilation (hair removed at the surface) and waxing, sugaring, lasers and electrolysis into epilation (hair removed at or below the follicle). That’s why waxing, sugaring and laser all give longer-lasting smoothness than a razor.

Sugaring: the closest swap for a Brazilian wax

Sugaring uses a paste instead of wax. Ours is three ingredients: sugar, water and lemon. Nothing else.

The technique is different too. Cleveland Clinic explains that sugaring applies paste against hair growth and removes it in the direction of growth, while waxing does the opposite. It also notes that the cooled paste adheres less to skin, so sugaring may remove fewer skin cells than waxing.

The 2021 review adds that sugaring may reduce redness, trauma and scarring compared with shaving or hot waxing. It also says sugaring can still cause irritation or allergic reactions, and we’d rather you know that going in. Technique matters. Too many passes over the same spot can leave skin sore, which is one reason we never rush.

Sugaring: the closest swap for a Brazilian wax

Does sugaring hurt less than waxing?

Sometimes, yes. Cleveland Clinic says some people feel less pain with sugaring, but pain tolerance is individual. We won’t tell you it’s a spa nap.

What we can tell you is what we do about it:

  • Every Brazilian includes complimentary numbing spray.

  • Appointments take 30 to 35 minutes, so we’re not rushing and we can give you a breather when you need one.

  • Hair is removed in the direction it grows, which tends to be easier on skin than being yanked against it.

  • Ingrown-hair extractions are included, so you don’t leave with bumps you’re annoyed about.

Come as you are. No one is judging your hair length, your grow-out, or how nervous you are.

How long do results last?

Baylor’s dermatology team says sugaring can leave the area hair-free for about three weeks. InStyle puts it in a similar range. Regrowth varies by person, hair cycle and how consistent you are, and many of our clients settle into a regular rhythm after a few visits.

The other alternatives, honestly

We’re a sugaring studio, but you should understand the whole menu.

Shaving

The AAD calls shaving quick and inexpensive, but short-lived. It’s also known for causing ingrown hairs. If you’re reading this because bumps are a constant, a razor tends to be part of the story, not the solution. Many of our clients use it only for the odd touch-up between appointments.

Depilatory creams

Creams dissolve the hair shaft at the surface. According to the 2021 review, they usually stay on skin 3 to 15 minutes, regrow more slowly than shaved hair, and can cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. The bikini area is delicate, so if you try one, follow the timing on the label exactly and read the product’s warnings.

Laser hair removal

Laser is the long-game option. The AAD says it generally takes about six or more treatments and can’t effectively target blonde, white, gray or red hair. Baylor describes it as significant reduction rather than guaranteed permanence, usually 3 to 8 sessions plus maintenance about every six months.

Two practical points from Baylor: the laser needs hair in the follicle, so waxing or plucking should stop for six weeks before treatment, and tanning raises the risk of a poor result. If laser is your goal, shaving between sessions is the way to go, and a dermatologist or licensed laser provider can tell you whether it suits your skin tone and hair color.

Laser hair removal

Electrolysis

Electrolysis treats individual follicles and takes several sessions. The AAD notes it may feel uncomfortable or painful, that unsterile probes can cause infection, and that inexperienced treatment can cause burns or scarring, including keloids in some darker skin tones. If you go this route, choose a provider with proper training and sterile technique.

Which one fits you?

Pick by what’s bugging you most.

  1. You love the smooth result of waxing but hate the aftermath. Sugaring is the closest match and the easiest switch.

  2. You’re prone to ingrowns and bumps. Skip the daily razor. Sugaring plus a bikini-area skin-care routine is our usual recommendation.

  3. You’re prepping for a trip or event. Book sugaring a few days ahead (more on timing below).

  4. You want to be done with hair for years. Ask a dermatologist about laser or electrolysis, and know that it’s a series of appointments, not one.

  5. Your skin reacts to nearly everything. Tell us before we start. We look at your skin first, and we’d rather adjust than power through.

Skin tone, texture and dark spots

Hair removal can leave dark marks, especially when skin gets inflamed. The 2021 review lists post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation among the possible adverse effects of hair removal, and notes that pigment changes and burns from laser are more likely in darker skin types without appropriate technique. It also points out that much of the evidence is based on darker hair and lighter skin, so don’t assume every study applies to you.

That’s why we care about gentle technique, no rushing and no burning-hot product. Our team works with a wide range of skin tones, hair textures and sensitive-skin needs, and every esthetician is trained one-on-one by the owners for weeks before taking clients.

If you already have darkness on your bikini line, inner thighs or underarms, we offer professional intimate and body brightening peels for dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. They’re designed to even tone without changing your natural skin color. Intimate is $125, Inner Thighs is $125, Booty Cheeks is $145, and Intimate + Inner Thighs is $225.

Ingrowns and bumps: add a vajacial

A vajacial is skin care for the bikini area, meant to help with ingrowns and bumps. Ours is called Pretty Kitty ($63), and the Mini Kitty Add-On is $43 if you’re pairing it with another service. You can see what’s involved on our vajacial and bikini skin care page. Your kitty will thank you.

Safety notes before you switch

A few things to check before any epilation method, sugaring included:

  • Isotretinoin (Accutane). Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding sugaring for at least six months after isotretinoin, and says waxing within six months can cause permanent scarring. Check with your prescriber.

  • Tretinoin and other irritating topicals. Cleveland Clinic recommends stopping them several days beforehand. Ask your dermatologist how long applies to your product.

  • Inflamed or infected skin. Skip sugaring until it has healed, and see a doctor if you suspect an infection.

  • Eczema or very sensitive skin. Cleveland Clinic notes that eczema flares and very sensitive skin can mean more irritation. Mention it when you book.

Pregnant? Tell us when you book so we can adjust for your comfort, and check with your OB or midwife if you have any medical concerns.

What to expect at your first sugaring appointment

If you’ve never had a Brazilian, here’s the flow:

  1. Check-in and chat. We ask about your skin, any products or medications, and what you want (all off, a landing strip, something in between).

  2. Skin check. We look before we start, especially if you’re sensitive.

  3. Numbing spray. Included with every Brazilian.

  4. Sugaring. About 30 to 35 minutes, with breathers when you want them.

  5. Extractions. Any ingrown hairs get taken care of, also included.

  6. Aftercare. We tell you how to treat your skin so it stays calm.

For the best result, hair should be long enough for the paste to grab. Don’t shave in between appointments if you can help it. For a trip or wedding, a few days ahead (usually 2 to 3) gives skin time to settle.

Beyond the bikini line

We sugar more than Brazilians. Anyone of any gender can book body sugaring: Full Back is $73, Chest + Stomach is $74, Full Legs is $113 and Underarms start at $28. Facial sugaring includes Upper Lip at $17 and Full Face (brows excluded) at $56. For brows, Eyebrow Shaping is $42 and Brow Shaping & Tint is $63. Brazilians and vajacials aren’t offered for these body services.

We’re non-tipping, so the price you see is the price you pay.

Our take on switching from wax

We started Sugar Pop as a one-room suite in 2017 because we believed hair removal could feel better. Both of us are working estheticians, and we’re in the studio every day, so we see what happens when people come in after years of waxing: the redness, the ingrowns, the dread.

Here’s what we think. A great Brazilian isn’t only about the paste. It’s about time, skill and respect. We take 30 to 35 minutes because rushing is how skin gets irritated and how people end up feeling like a number. We train every esthetician one-on-one for weeks because technique is everything with delicate skin.

We also think you shouldn’t have to pay extra for comfort. Numbing spray and ingrown extractions come with every Brazilian, and we don’t take tips, so the price you see is the price you pay. Our sugar paste is sugar, water and lemon, and we use it on every skin tone, hair texture and body that walks in.

If you’ve been wondering whether to switch, we say try it once. We think you’ll feel the difference, and we’ll be there to make it easy.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to a Brazilian wax?

For most people who want similar results, sugaring is the best match: it removes hair from the root and lasts about three weeks. If you want something longer-term, laser or electrolysis are options, but both need multiple sessions. Your skin, hair color and budget decide which is right.

Does sugaring hurt less than waxing?

Some people say yes. Cleveland Clinic notes that pain is individual, and sugaring can still irritate skin. At our studio, numbing spray is included with every Brazilian, and we never rush you.

Can I get a Brazilian while pregnant?

Many people do, and we sugar pregnant clients and adjust the service for comfort. Skin can feel more sensitive during pregnancy, so tell us when you book. If you have a medical concern, check with your OB or midwife first.

How far ahead should I book before a vacation or wedding?

We suggest 2 to 3 days before, so any redness has settled and you’re still smooth. Book your appointment a little ahead, since popular times fill up. Check our booking page for current availability.

Will sugaring cause dark spots?

Any hair removal that inflames skin can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, as the 2021 review lists. Gentle technique and an experienced esthetician matter. If you already have dark spots, ask us about our brightening peels.
